A live surgery symposium, which featured two minimally invasive surgeries, was hosted at the St. Cloud Hospital on June 1. Dr. Joseph Nessler, the chairman of the meeting, performed a dual incision hip replacement utilizing navigation and Dr. Steve Mulawka performed an MIS knee replacement also featuring navigation. The meeting focused on the technology of navigation which is similar to a GPS system and also the state-of-the-art endo suites highlighting the St. Cloud Hospital’s commitment to advanced technology. Dr. Nessler's involvement with consulting on new technology and research projects lead to a faculty consisting of surgeons from all across the United States as well as Canada. The 95 participants came from across the United States and as far away as the Ukraine.
This was the first meeting of its kind to be held in St. Cloud and had presentations on numerous hot topics such as hip resurfacing and gender specific knee components. In addition to the surgeons, various medical personnel from St. Cloud Orthopedics and St. Cloud Hospital were in attendance, which helped make the meeting a huge success. The conference area overall received high marks as did the visuals in the conference rooms. “This is as impressive as I have seen and I go to a lot of these meetings,” stated Phil Shaffalo a regional representative for Stryker Three Rivers which covers the East Coast. Stryker Orthopedics was the main sponsor for this event.
